Birch Copper Scrap

Birch is the ISRI designation for No. 2 copper wire: miscellaneous unalloyed copper wire at a nominal 96% copper content, 94% minimum by electrolytic assay. The specification is defined by what must be absent: insulation, burnt or brittle wire, hair wire, excessively leaded, tinned or soldered material, brasses and bronzes, iron and non-metallics. It sits one step below bare bright in the grading hierarchy and is normally traded together with Cliff as the combined Birch/Cliff grade. Buyers price it on recoverable metal after processing, so sorting decides whether a lot clears at Birch pricing or gets downgraded.
